ABUJA — The Supreme Court of Nigeria has upheld the death sentence handed down to a Delta State kidnapper who murdered his victim after the family had already paid the demanded ransom. Daily Post confirmed the Supreme Court’s decision on Friday. The ruling ends years of appeals by the convicted man.

The case involves the abduction of a businessman in Delta State several years ago. The kidnappers collected a ransom payment from the victim’s family. Despite receiving the money, they killed the victim before releasing him. The primary suspect was arrested, tried, and convicted by a Delta State court, which imposed the death penalty.

The Supreme Court’s confirmation of the death sentence is significant because it closes all domestic legal avenues for the convict. Absent a presidential pardon or intervention, the sentence must now be carried out under Nigerian law.

Justice and Deterrence

The victim’s family welcomed the Supreme Court ruling but said no judicial outcome can restore what was taken from them. They said the conviction and death sentence at least ensures that the man who killed their loved one faces accountability. They urged Nigerian courts to continue applying firm sentences to kidnapping cases.

Anti-kidnapping advocates said the Supreme Court ruling sends an important deterrent message. They said kidnappers who believe they can collect ransoms and eliminate witnesses must understand that Nigerian courts will pursue maximum sentences. Consistent application of severe penalties is one part of a comprehensive anti-kidnapping strategy.

However, legal experts noted that Nigeria’s prison system holds hundreds of death row inmates whose sentences have not been carried out for years or decades. They said the deterrent value of death sentences is reduced when there is uncertainty about whether they will actually be executed.
