Heavy security has been deployed around Aso Rock and Eagle Square in Abuja. The deployment follows a planned protest by Omoyele Sowore and others. The Take It Back Movement organised the demonstration.

Access roads to the presidential villa have been restricted. Security forces blocked major routes leading to the area. Police and military personnel are visible at strategic locations. The protest relates to recent abductions in Oyo State.

Sowore had announced plans to lead a march to Aso Rock. The group demands government action on rising insecurity. Specifically, they want more concrete measures to address school kidnappings.

Authorities Take Precautions

Multiple news outlets reported the security buildup. The Nation Newspaper noted access restrictions six hours before the protest. Premium Times reported that the protest took place in Abuja. Punch Newspapers confirmed heavy security presence at Aso Rock.

Daily Trust noted that authorities beefed up security as protesters hit Abuja streets. TheCable also reported heightened security around Aso Rock and Eagle Square. Channels Television confirmed security measures were linked to the planned protest by Sowore and others.

The protest organisers have not confirmed the number of demonstrators. Police have not issued an official statement on the security deployment. Meanwhile, similar demonstrations have occurred in other cities.

Free Speech Concerns

Civil society groups have raised concerns about the heavy security response. They argue that peaceful protest is a constitutional right. However, authorities maintain that security measures are necessary to prevent violence.

The protest comes amid growing frustration over insecurity. School abductions have become more frequent in recent months. Citizens are demanding more effective action from the government.
