The Good Governance Support Group has praised Senator Godswill Akpabio’s emergence as Senate President. The group described Akpabio’s choice as beyond zoning considerations. The statement came as the 10th National Assembly leadership took shape.
The group argued that Akpabio’s eligibility and qualifications set him apart. The former Akwa Ibom State governor brought executive experience to the legislative role. His supporters believe this combination strengthens governance.
Leadership Elections Conclude
The 10th Senate witnessed a keen contest for the presidency position. Senator Akpabio faced competition from Senator Abdulaziz Yari. Voting took place during the Senate inauguration ceremony. Akpabio emerged victorious after the ballot.
The House of Representatives also elected its leadership. Tajudeen Abbas became Speaker with Benjamin Kalu as Deputy Speaker. The APC leadership had zoning arrangements that favoured these candidates.
Pro APC support groups had earlier called for members to respect the party’s choices. The National Coalition of APC Support Groups said Abbas and Kalu would make good Speaker and Deputy. They urged members elect to support the party’s decision.
Zoning Debate Continues
The zoning of National Assembly leadership positions generated significant debate. Some argued that competence should trump zoning. Others maintained that zoning promotes fairness among geopolitical zones.
Senator Abdul Ningi had earlier claimed there were plots to arrest Senator Yari. However, the election proceeded without major incident. The new leadership now faces the challenge of legislative oversight and lawmaking.
Akpabio has promised to work with all senators regardless of party affiliation. His deputy, Senator Barau Jibrin, echoed this sentiment. The 10th Senate faces critical legislation including budget approvals and constitutional review.
