Soldiers Repel Bandits Toward Kebbi Communities, Restore Calm

Nigerian soldiers have successfully repelled a group of armed bandits attempting to invade several rural communities in Kebbi State, restoring calm after hours of intense confrontation.

The attack, which occurred late Sunday night, targeted villages along the Danko-Wasagu and Zuru axis, areas that have suffered repeated assaults from criminal gangs in recent months. Residents reported hearing heavy gunfire as troops engaged the assailants who were advancing from neighboring forests.

Confirming the incident, Brigadier General Tukur Gusau, spokesperson for the Nigerian Army, said the troops acted swiftly following intelligence reports that the bandits were mobilizing toward Kebbi’s border settlements. “Our men intercepted the movement and engaged them decisively. Several bandits were neutralized, and weapons recovered,” he stated.

He added that the operation was part of ongoing efforts under Operation Hadarin Daji, a joint military campaign aimed at dismantling bandit networks across the Northwest region.

Eyewitnesses described scenes of bravery as soldiers positioned themselves strategically to prevent the attackers from reaching populated areas. “We were terrified, but the soldiers stood their ground. They saved our village,” said Malam Usman, a farmer from Wasagu.

Local authorities have since commended the military’s response, noting that the swift intervention prevented what could have been another tragic episode of mass displacement. Kebbi State Commissioner for Security Affairs, Alhaji Garba Rabiu, assured residents that reinforcements have been deployed to maintain peace and monitor the area for possible regrouping of the criminals.

“We are working closely with the military and local vigilantes to ensure these communities remain safe. The government will not allow bandits to reclaim any space,” Rabiu said.

Security analysts say the renewed military pressure reflects a broader shift toward proactive intelligence-led operations rather than reactive responses. “The army’s quick interception shows improved coordination and community trust,” noted Dr. Amina Bello, a defense analyst based in Sokoto.

Despite the victory, residents remain anxious, calling for sustained presence of security forces and improved communication systems to alert authorities during emergencies. Many villages in Kebbi’s southern belt still grapple with the trauma of past attacks, where hundreds were displaced and livelihoods destroyed.

The Nigerian Army has urged citizens to remain vigilant and report suspicious movements, emphasizing that the fight against banditry requires collective effort.

As dawn broke over the affected communities, relief and gratitude replaced fear. Children returned to school, traders reopened shops, and farmers resumed work — small but powerful signs of resilience in a region that has endured too much violence.

For Kebbi’s people, the soldiers’ stand was more than a military victory; it was a reaffirmation of hope — that peace, though fragile, can still be defended.
