Anambra INEC Stands on August 29 Poll Despite Legal Challenge

The Anambra State Independent Electoral Commission (ANSIEC) has reaffirmed its decision to proceed with the August 29 local government election, despite a pending lawsuit challenging the process.

In a statement released in Awka, the Commission said it remains committed to conducting a credible, transparent, and inclusive election, emphasizing that the legal dispute will not derail its constitutional mandate.

Chairperson of ANSIEC, Dr. Sylvia Chika Ezeani, described the election as a crucial step toward restoring democratic governance at the grassroots level. She noted that preparations were in full swing, with logistics, training, and voter education already underway across the 21 local government areas of the state.

“We are guided by the law and the will of the people. The election will hold as scheduled on August 29. Our duty is to ensure that every eligible voter has the opportunity to participate freely and fairly,” Ezeani said.

The lawsuit, filed by a group of political stakeholders, reportedly questions the legality of the Commission’s timetable and the eligibility of certain candidates. However, ANSIEC insists that all procedures followed align with the Anambra State Electoral Law and the 1999 Constitution of Nigeria.

Political observers say the Commission’s stance reflects growing confidence in local electoral institutions amid Nigeria’s broader struggle for credible elections. “This is a test of institutional independence. If ANSIEC delivers a transparent process, it will strengthen democracy at the grassroots,” said Dr. Chinedu Okafor, a political analyst at Nnamdi Azikiwe University.

Meanwhile, civil society groups have urged all parties to respect the rule of law while allowing the electoral process to continue unhindered. The Anambra Civil Engagement Forum (ACEF) commended ANSIEC’s resolve, calling on citizens to participate peacefully. “Democracy thrives when people vote, not when elections are stalled by endless litigation,” ACEF stated.

Preparations for the poll have intensified, with security agencies pledging adequate protection for voters and officials. The Commission also announced that sensitive materials would be distributed under strict supervision to prevent tampering or irregularities.

For many residents, the upcoming election represents more than a political event—it is a chance to restore local governance and accountability after years of administrative gaps. Traders, youth groups, and community leaders have expressed optimism that the process will usher in leaders who understand grassroots challenges.

As the countdown to August 29 continues, ANSIEC’s determination stands as a symbol of resilience in Nigeria’s democratic journey—an affirmation that, despite legal hurdles, the people’s right to choose their leaders remains paramount.
