The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has released the 2026 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) results, with more than 1.2 million candidates passing English Language and Mathematics. The announcement marks a significant milestone in Nigeria’s education sector, reflecting both progress and persistent challenges.
According to WAEC officials, over 1.8 million candidates sat for the examination across Nigeria. Out of this figure, 1.2 million achieved credit passes in English and Mathematics, the two core subjects required for admission into higher institutions. The Council noted that the performance represents a slight improvement compared to the 2025 results.
WAEC highlighted variations in performance across states. Urban centres recorded higher pass rates, while rural areas continued to struggle with lower outcomes. Education experts attribute this disparity to differences in infrastructure, teacher quality, and access to learning materials.

The Council reported that female candidates accounted for nearly half of the total entries. Encouragingly, female students performed strongly in English Language, while male candidates dominated in Mathematics. Officials said the trend reflects ongoing efforts to promote gender balance in education.
The Federal Ministry of Education welcomed the results, describing them as evidence of resilience among Nigerian students despite economic and social challenges. A spokesperson for the Ministry said the government will intensify investment in teacher training, digital learning tools, and school infrastructure to sustain improvement.
WAEC noted that examination malpractice remains a concern, though cases have declined compared to previous years. The Council confirmed that results of candidates involved in malpractice have been withheld pending investigation. Officials stressed that integrity remains central to the credibility of the examination.
