UN, NSCDC Partner to Tackle Terror Financing, Illegal Mining

The United Nations (UN) has partnered with the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) to intensify efforts against terror financing and illegal mining activities across the country.

The collaboration was announced during a high-level meeting in Abuja, where both parties highlighted the growing link between illegal mining and the funding of violent groups. Officials explained that criminal networks often exploit mineral resources to generate revenue for terrorism and other unlawful activities.

NSCDC Commandant-General, Dr. Ahmed Audi, stressed that the partnership with the UN will enhance intelligence gathering, capacity building, and community engagement. He noted that illegal mining has become a major security challenge, particularly in mineral-rich states.

“Illegal mining is not just an economic crime; it is a national security threat. Funds generated from these activities are being used to finance terrorism and destabilise communities. This partnership will help us confront the problem more effectively,” Audi said.

The UN representative at the meeting commended Nigeria’s commitment to tackling the issue, pledging technical support and expertise to strengthen enforcement. “We are working with NSCDC to ensure that Nigeria’s mineral resources are protected from exploitation by criminal groups. This is critical for peace and sustainable development,” the official stated.

Analysts say the collaboration reflects growing recognition of the link between resource exploitation and insecurity. They argue that addressing illegal mining requires not only enforcement but also community involvement and economic alternatives for those engaged in the practice.

Civil society organisations have welcomed the initiative, urging authorities to ensure transparency and accountability in its implementation. They emphasised that communities affected by illegal mining must be included in decision-making processes to prevent further marginalisation.

Illegal mining has long been a challenge in Nigeria, with reports of environmental degradation, loss of revenue, and violent clashes in mining areas. Experts warn that without decisive action, the problem could continue to fuel insecurity and undermine economic growth.

The NSCDC has already deployed special units to monitor mining sites and enforce regulations. With UN support, officials say these efforts will be scaled up to cover more regions and strengthen coordination with other security agencies.

For local communities, the partnership offers hope of reduced violence and improved regulation of mining activities. Residents in affected areas have repeatedly called for stronger government intervention to protect lives and livelihoods.

As Nigeria continues to battle terrorism and insecurity, stakeholders agree that cutting off funding sources is critical. The UN-NSCDC collaboration is expected to play a key role in disrupting criminal networks and safeguarding the country’s mineral wealth.
