Africa’s richest man, Aliko Dangote, is preparing a $5 billion Initial Public Offering (IPO) to finance the expansion of his Lagos-based refinery, one of the largest in the world. The move signals a bold step to attract global investors and strengthen Nigeria’s position in the energy market.
Dangote Industries Limited confirmed that the IPO will provide capital to scale up operations at the refinery, which already has a capacity of 650,000 barrels per day. The expansion aims to boost output, diversify product lines, and enhance Nigeria’s ability to meet domestic fuel demand while exporting surplus to international markets.
Analysts say the IPO will open opportunities for institutional investors and retail shareholders across Africa and beyond. By listing shares, Dangote seeks to deepen transparency, improve corporate governance, and align the refinery with global standards. The offering is expected to attract strong interest given the refinery’s strategic importance.

Nigeria, Africa’s largest oil producer, has long struggled with inadequate refining capacity, forcing the country to import most of its refined petroleum products. The Dangote Refinery, commissioned in 2023, was designed to reverse this trend. Expansion through the IPO could reduce Nigeria’s reliance on imports and stabilise fuel prices.
The refinery’s scale positions it as a major player in global energy supply. With expansion, Nigeria could emerge as a key exporter of refined products to West Africa, Europe, and parts of Asia. Industry experts believe the IPO will also strengthen investor confidence in Nigeria’s energy sector.
Dangote Industries has not disclosed the exact timeline for the IPO but confirmed that discussions with financial advisers are ongoing. Market watchers expect the listing to take place on the Nigerian Exchange, with potential cross-listings in London or Dubai to attract international investors.

Energy stakeholders welcomed the announcement, noting that the IPO could transform Nigeria’s refining landscape. They emphasised that increased production capacity would support industrial growth, create jobs, and generate foreign exchange earnings. However, some cautioned that regulatory clarity and investor protection must be guaranteed.
Despite optimism, challenges remain. Analysts highlight issues such as fluctuating global oil prices, foreign exchange constraints, and Nigeria’s regulatory environment. They warn that investor confidence will depend on how effectively Dangote Industries addresses these risks.
The IPO is expected to stimulate Nigeria’s capital market, offering new opportunities for investors and boosting liquidity. Economists argue that successful expansion of the refinery could contribute significantly to Nigeria’s GDP, reduce fuel subsidy burdens, and enhance energy security.
Dangote’s plan reflects a broader ambition to position Nigeria as a hub for energy investment. If successful, the IPO will not only finance refinery expansion but also set a precedent for large-scale industrial projects seeking global capital.
