You do not need expensive supplements to fight inflammation. Nigeria’s fruit markets are full of powerful, affordable options that can protect your body every single day.

Inflammation is the body’s natural response to injury or infection. However, when it becomes chronic, it drives serious conditions such as diabetes, heart disease, arthritis, and even some cancers. The good news is that certain fruits actively work against this process.

Seven Fruits to Eat Regularly

Pawpaw is at the top of the list. This widely available fruit contains an enzyme called papain that breaks down protein and actively reduces inflammation in joints and the digestive tract. Eat half a medium pawpaw each morning for the best results.

Pineapple contains bromelain, a compound with strong anti-inflammatory properties. It is particularly helpful after exercise or injury. A daily serving of fresh pineapple can help muscles recover faster and reduce swelling.

Watermelon is rich in lycopene and citrulline, both of which lower inflammation markers in the blood. Furthermore, its high water content supports kidney function.

More Powerful Options

Guava provides more vitamin C than most citrus fruits. Vitamin C is a key antioxidant that neutralises the free radicals responsible for chronic inflammation.

African cherry, locally called agbalumo or udara, is packed with vitamin C and antioxidants. It is available seasonally but worth buying in bulk when found.

Avocado pear contains healthy monounsaturated fats and anti-inflammatory compounds that support heart and brain health. Additionally, its fibre content helps balance gut bacteria.

Soursop, known as graviola, contains powerful phytochemicals that research has linked to anti-inflammatory and anti-tumour activity.

Simple Tips

Eat these fruits fresh rather than juiced. Juicing removes the fibre your body needs. Combine two or three varieties daily for the best anti-inflammatory effect.
