Senate Summons NFF, NSC Chiefs Over Poor Football Results
SHARE

Nigeria’s Senate has summoned the leadership of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) and the National Sports Commission (NSC) to appear before lawmakers following the country’s poor performances in recent football competitions.

The resolution was reached during a plenary session in Abuja, where senators expressed concern over Nigeria’s declining fortunes in both men’s and women’s football. Lawmakers noted that despite the country’s rich football history, recent results have fallen short of expectations.

Senators highlighted Nigeria’s failure to qualify for key tournaments and inconsistent performances at continental and global levels. They argued that the situation reflects deeper issues in sports administration, including poor planning, inadequate funding, and lack of accountability.

Senate Committee on Sports Chairman, Senator Obinna Ogba, said the summons is aimed at ensuring transparency and accountability. “We cannot continue to watch Nigerian football decline. The NFF and NSC must explain why our teams are struggling and what measures they are taking to address the situation,” he stated.

Lawmakers also raised concerns about grassroots development, noting that Nigeria’s football success in the past was built on strong youth programmes. They urged the NFF and NSC to prioritize talent discovery and development across the country.

Some senators criticized the frequent changes in coaching staff and poor welfare of players, which they said contribute to instability in the national teams. They stressed that proper management and long-term planning are essential for Nigeria to regain its place among football’s elite.

The Senate’s intervention comes amid growing public frustration over Nigeria’s football results. Fans and stakeholders have repeatedly called for reforms in the administration of the sport, arguing that leadership must focus on development rather than politics.

Civil society groups welcomed the Senate’s move, describing it as a step toward accountability. They urged lawmakers to ensure that the inquiry leads to concrete reforms rather than mere political statements.

The NFF and NSC are expected to appear before the Senate in the coming weeks to present reports on their activities, funding, and strategies for improvement. Lawmakers say the outcome of the session will guide future legislative actions on sports governance.

Nigeria remains Africa’s most successful football nation historically, with multiple continental titles and strong global recognition. However, analysts argue that without urgent reforms, the country risks losing its competitive edge.

For now, attention turns to the Senate hearing, where football administrators will be required to explain the reasons behind Nigeria’s dismal performances and outline clear plans for revival.
