ABUJA — Social Democratic Party presidential candidate Prince Adewole Adebayo has declared that he will face President Bola Tinubu in 2027 without fear. Adebayo made the statement in an interview published on Monday.
He said the SDP is focused on building a credible alternative to the APC. He described his party as the only truly independent opposition that is not beholden to political godfathers or state governors with hidden agendas.
“I am not intimidated by the prospect of facing President Tinubu. The Nigerian people deserve a real choice in 2027. We will give them that choice,” Adebayo said in the interview carried by ThisDay newspaper.
Adebayo ran for president in 2023 under the SDP banner. He finished outside the top four candidates. However, he said the experience gave him a stronger understanding of Nigeria’s electoral dynamics and a clearer vision for his 2027 campaign.
SDP Positions Itself
The SDP is one of five parties with a national structure capable of contesting elections in most states. It joins the APC, PDP, ADC, and NNPP as parties with administrative depth across the federation.
However, the SDP faces competition from the ADC, which has attracted major opposition figures including Atiku Abubakar and Rotimi Amaechi. Adebayo must convince voters that the SDP offers something unique that neither the PDP nor the ADC can provide.
In addition, the SDP’s police invited its National Working Committee over an alleged attempt to take over party headquarters. The internal dispute adds another layer of complexity to the party’s preparations for 2027.
The Opposition Landscape
Nigeria’s opposition heading into 2027 is deeply fragmented. Multiple parties and candidates are competing for the anti-Tinubu vote. Analysts say this fragmentation could work in Tinubu’s favour if opposition parties fail to unite behind a single candidate.
Adebayo acknowledged the fragmentation challenge. He said the SDP is open to discussions about opposition unity, but only on terms that do not compromise the party’s independence. He said he will not merge the SDP into a coalition that is simply a vehicle for former PDP politicians.
As the primary season enters its final stretch, all major parties must file their candidate lists with INEC by the end of May. Adebayo said the SDP is on track to meet all INEC requirements and will present a full slate of candidates for the 2027 elections.
