Onwuzurike Seeks to End Nigeria’s 32 Year 200m Drought

Udodi Onwuzurike will hope to become the first Nigerian to win a men’s 200m medal at the Commonwealth Games in 32 years, after booking his place in this year’s final in Glasgow on Thursday.

Onwuzurike maintained his impressive form to progress to Friday’s final, running a time of 20.22 seconds in the semi final as he chases a Commonwealth Games medal in the event.

Nigeria’s last men’s 200m medal at the Commonwealth Games dates back more than three decades, making Onwuzurike’s push for the podium a significant potential milestone for the country’s sprinting programme.

The sprinter’s qualifying time positions him among the contenders for a podium finish in Friday’s final, alongside sprinters from traditionally strong Commonwealth athletics nations.

Nigerian athletics officials have expressed confidence in Onwuzurike’s chances, with his semi final performance seen as a strong indicator of his readiness for the final showdown.

A podium finish would add to what has already been a strong showing for Team Nigeria’s athletics contingent at the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games.
