Amusan Settles for Bronze, Ending Hurdles Title Reign at Commonwealth Games

World record holder Tobi Amusan missed out on the chance to win a third consecutive women’s 100m hurdles title at the Commonwealth Games on Thursday, settling for bronze in the final with a time of 12.60 seconds.

Bahamas’ world indoor record holder, Devynne Charlton, claimed gold in 12.33 seconds, while Jamaica’s Megan Simmonds took silver in 12.41 seconds, ending Amusan’s bid for a historic third straight title.

Amusan had entered the competition as the favourite, boasting the fastest season’s best in the field at 12.28 seconds, and had earlier won her heat in a wind assisted 12.19 seconds.

The 29 year old had previously won gold at both the Gold Coast 2018 and Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games, and was aiming to become the first woman to win three consecutive titles in the event.

Despite the bronze finish, Amusan’s continued presence on the podium extends her run as one of Nigeria’s most consistent international medal contenders in the sprint hurdles.

Nigerian athletics fans have expressed continued confidence in Amusan’s status as a world class competitor, even as the closely fought final denied her the historic three peat she sought in Glasgow.
