LAGOS — Prominent Lagos politician Funso Doherty has accepted the nomination of the Nigeria Democratic Congress as its candidate for the state’s 2027 governorship election.
Doherty disclosed his acceptance in a letter shared on his official social media account on Friday. He said the decision came after careful reflection on the responsibility the role demands.
A Call for Humility and Service
In the letter, Doherty stressed humility as central to his approach to the campaign. He said he hoped to build a coalition of Lagos residents focused on practical governance rather than political theatrics.
“This is a responsibility I do not take lightly. I accept it with humility and a commitment to serve the people of Lagos with honesty,” Doherty wrote in the statement shared with supporters.
Party officials within the NDC welcomed the announcement, describing Doherty as a candidate capable of presenting a fresh alternative ahead of the 2027 race. They said internal preparations for the campaign would begin in earnest in the coming months.
Early Positioning Ahead of 2027
Political watchers note that early acceptance speeches like Doherty’s often signal a longer campaign runway, giving lesser known parties more time to build name recognition against dominant parties in Lagos politics.
Doherty previously contested in past Lagos elections under different party platforms. His latest move places him among a growing list of politicians positioning themselves ahead of what is expected to be a competitive race in the state.
The NDC has not yet announced its full slate of candidates for other positions in the 2027 cycle, though officials said further announcements would follow in subsequent weeks.
