ILORIN — Armed bandits attacked a community in Kwara State, killing several residents and setting the Emir’s palace ablaze. National Accord Newspaper confirmed the attack on Monday. Security agencies have been deployed to the area and are pursuing the attackers.
The attack on the Emir’s palace is particularly significant. It represents an audacious assault on one of the most symbolically important structures in any traditional community. The burning of a royal palace is a deliberate act of intimidation designed to signal that no institution, no matter how respected, is beyond the reach of the armed group.
Kwara State Government condemned the attack in the strongest terms. Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq said the assault on the Emir and his community is an attack on the entire state. He pledged to work with federal security agencies to bring the perpetrators to justice.
Northwest Violence Spreading
The pattern of bandit attacks in Kwara State resembles the northwest violence that has plagued Zamfara, Katsina, Kebbi, and Sokoto for years. Analysts said the tactics, including nighttime raids on communities, burning of structures, and targeting of traditional rulers and their symbols, are characteristic of organised bandit networks that are expanding their operational territory.
The Kwara attack comes weeks after Lakurawa terrorists killed two Customs officers in neighbouring Kebbi State. The geographic concentration of violence along the Kwara-Kebbi-Niger corridor suggests a coordinated expansion of criminal and terrorist activity southward from the northwest core.
Community leaders in Kwara called for the immediate deployment of additional security forces to vulnerable rural communities. They said the attack on the Emir’s palace must prompt a response that matches the boldness of the assault. Anything less will encourage more attacks.
