ABUJA — The Department of State Services has arrested five suspects in connection with the abduction of students from Papiri Secondary School. Daily Trust confirmed the arrests on Monday. The operation followed weeks of intelligence gathering by DSS operatives who tracked the suspects’ movements and communications.

DSS did not immediately release the identities or locations of the arrested suspects. The agency said investigations are ongoing and that further arrests are expected. It said the operation was coordinated with the police and military in the state where the kidnapping occurred.

The Papiri Secondary School kidnapping was one of several school abductions that occurred in Nigeria in the weeks leading up to and following the Oriire attack in Oyo State. Each incident added to the national alarm about the safety of students in schools across the country.

Intelligence-Led Operations

The DSS said the Papiri arrests demonstrate the effectiveness of intelligence-led security operations. The agency said patient surveillance over several weeks allowed it to identify the full network rather than arresting individual low-level actors while leaving the broader criminal structure intact.

Security analysts praised the DSS approach. They said disrupting entire networks rather than making immediate arrests that tip off other members is a more effective long-term strategy. They said this approach should be standard operating procedure for all kidnapping cases.

Families of the abducted Papiri students expressed cautious relief at the arrests. However, several said their children are still being held and that arrests mean nothing until the children are safely returned. The DSS said rescue operations are a priority and that the arrested suspects are being questioned to determine the location of any remaining captives.
