The Nigerian Army has launched an internal investigation into the leak of a classified Department of State Services intelligence memo that warned of planned attacks by suspected Boko Haram insurgents and bandits in parts of Adamawa and Borno states.

The memo, whose contents began circulating beyond intended official channels, reportedly detailed specific threat assessments for communities across the two North East states, raising concerns about the security of sensitive intelligence material.

Army authorities say the investigation is focused specifically on identifying how the classified document was leaked, separate from the underlying security response to the threats the memo itself described.

The leak comes at a sensitive time for Nigeria’s security architecture, following the recent approval of an expanded Nigerian Army structure and a major recruitment drive aimed at strengthening the military’s operational capacity nationwide.

Security analysts say leaks of this nature can compromise operational planning by alerting targeted armed groups to anticipated security deployments, potentially undermining the effectiveness of planned countermeasures.

The Army has not disclosed a timeline for concluding the investigation, though officials say appropriate disciplinary action will follow once those responsible for the leak are identified.
