BAUCHI — The Bauchi State governorship candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress says the era of dominant political parties in Nigeria is gradually coming to an end. Punch reported the candidate’s declaration on Monday. He said the 2027 elections will reflect a growing desire among Nigerians for genuine political alternatives.
The NDC candidate said both the APC and PDP have failed Nigerians after decades of alternating in power. He said voters, particularly young Nigerians, are no longer content with choosing between two brands that deliver the same outcomes of poor governance, corruption, and insecurity.
Kwankwaso’s NDC has been positioning itself as a credible third force in northern politics. The party’s nomination of governorship and senate candidates in Kano, Bauchi, and other states signals its ambition to contest seriously in 2027 rather than as a protest vehicle.
The Third-Force Argument
Political analysts have debated the viability of third-party politics in Nigeria for decades. Previous attempts to build sustainable alternatives to the APC and PDP have repeatedly failed due to funding limitations, weak grassroots structures, and the tendency of prominent third-party politicians to eventually defect to one of the big two.
However, the NDC and Kwankwaso‘s established northern base give this latest third-force attempt more credibility than most. His Kwankwasiyya movement has genuine mass support in Kano and parts of the northwest that has survived multiple political transitions.
The Bauchi NDC candidate said his party is not intimidated by the APC’s incumbency advantage. He said Bauchi voters are ready for change and that his campaign will focus on concrete promises about security, agriculture, and youth employment that the current administration has failed to deliver.
