PORT HARCOURT — Fresh political tensions have emerged in Rivers State following President Tinubu’s lifting of the state of emergency. Vanguard reported on Monday that FCT Minister Nyesom Wike’s reported ambitions for the 2027 Rivers governorship are fuelling a new round of political manoeuvrings that could reignite the conflict that led to the emergency declaration.
Sources within the Rivers State political establishment said Wike’s allies in the state assembly are already positioning for a political realignment that would support his potential governorship bid. The sources said several lawmakers who had been aligned with Wike during the crisis against Fubara are being actively courted for a new coalition.
Wike has not publicly declared interest in the Rivers governorship. As a serving federal minister, he would be required to resign his position. However, political analysts said his ongoing involvement in Rivers State politics suggests he has not fully abandoned the ambition.
The Fubara Response
Governor Fubara said publicly that he is focused on governance and not on political intrigues. He said he welcomes all political actors in Rivers State to engage constructively with his administration’s development agenda. He deliberately avoided direct references to Wike.
Political analysts read Fubara’s measured response as a sign that he learned important lessons from the first round of the conflict. They said he is building his political base quietly while projecting stability publicly. This approach, they say, is smarter than the open confrontation that the first phase of the crisis involved.
The APC in Rivers State said it is monitoring the political developments and will respond as necessary to protect democratic governance in the state. The party said no individual’s ambition should be allowed to destabilise a state that desperately needs stable and accountable leadership.
