The death toll from a devastating fire at a music bar in Bangkok has risen to 30, with more than 70 people injured and 24 still in critical condition, according to a statement from the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration.
The blaze tore through the Rong Beer Na Ladprao bar in the northern part of the Thai capital late Sunday night, marking the city’s deadliest fire in seventeen years, with investigators still working to determine the exact cause.
Thai Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul said a musician performing at the bar reported seeing smoke coming from a circuit breaker near the stage before the power went out, followed by an explosion and thick smoke that quickly filled the venue.
Police said most victims were found trapped in windowless bathrooms near a rear exit, with investigators examining whether locked doors, obstructed pathways and flammable decorative materials near the stage contributed to the high casualty count.
Mourners have continued visiting the site since the blaze, leaving flowers and handwritten messages in multiple languages, while forensic teams work to identify remaining victims, some of whom did not carry identification at the time of the fire.
The tragedy has renewed scrutiny of fire safety standards at entertainment venues across Thailand, with structural engineers noting risk factors at the site even as a full investigation into the building’s compliance with safety codes continues.
