AI distruption: World Bank, IMF Warn of Jobs Crisis in Nigeria
SHARE

The rapid rise of artificial intelligence (AI) is reshaping economies worldwide, but global financial institutions are sounding the alarm for Nigeria and other developing nations. The World Bank and International Monetary Fund (IMF) have warned that millions of jobs could be at risk if governments fail to prepare for the sweeping changes AI will bring to the labor market.

Global Concerns, Local Impact
In recent reports, both the World Bank and IMF highlighted how automation and AI technologies are accelerating productivity in advanced economies. However, in countries like Nigeria, where unemployment already stands at troubling levels, the adoption of AI could displace workers in key sectors such as banking, manufacturing, and customer service.

Experts caution that without proactive policies, Nigeria may face a “double shock”: rising job losses alongside limited opportunities for retraining. The IMF noted that while AI can create new roles in tech and data analysis, the pace of change may overwhelm existing education and training systems.

Nigeria’s Vulnerability
Nigeria’s economy is heavily reliant on services and informal labor, areas most exposed to automation. Call centers, clerical work, and even parts of agriculture are increasingly being digitized. Analysts warn that young Nigerians, who make up more than 60% of the population, could be hardest hit if AI adoption outpaces job creation.
Dr. Amina Yusuf, a Lagos-based economist, explained: “AI is not just a Western phenomenon. Nigerian banks are already deploying chatbots, and manufacturing firms are testing smart robotics. The challenge is ensuring that displaced workers are not left behind.”

Opportunities Amid the Threat
Despite the warnings, both institutions emphasized that AI also presents opportunities. Nigeria could leverage AI to improve healthcare delivery, enhance agricultural productivity, and strengthen financial inclusion. For example, AI-driven diagnostic tools could help rural clinics, while smart farming solutions could boost crop yields.
The World Bank urged Nigeria to invest in digital infrastructure, expand internet access, and prioritize STEM education. By equipping young people with coding, data science, and AI literacy skills, the country can position itself as a hub for innovation rather than a victim of disruption.
Policy Recommendations

To mitigate risks, the IMF recommended:
Reskilling programs for workers in vulnerable industries.
Public-private partnerships to foster innovation while protecting jobs.
Social safety nets to cushion displaced workers.
Regulatory frameworks to ensure ethical AI use and prevent exploitation.
Nigeria’s Ministry of Labour has acknowledged the challenge, promising to roll out new vocational training initiatives. However, critics argue that implementation has been slow and underfunded.

Regional Perspective
The jobs crisis is not unique to Nigeria. Other African nations, including South Africa and Kenya, face similar warnings. The IMF stressed that the continent’s youthful population could either become a demographic dividend or a liability, depending on how governments respond to AI’s rise.

As AI adoption accelerates, the debate is shifting from whether jobs will be lost to how societies will adapt. For Nigeria, the stakes are high: failure to act could deepen unemployment and inequality, while bold reforms could unlock new pathways for growth.
