Wike Hails Fubara’s Political Reconciliation

…Says Governor Has ‘Corrected His Mistakes’

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has commended Governor Siminalayi Fubara of Rivers State for reconciling with his former political allies, describing the move as a “correction of past mistakes” and a step toward political stability in the state.

Speaking to journalists in Abuja on Tuesday after inspecting ongoing road projects across the FCT, Wike said Fubara’s decision to return to the political camp that produced him was not an act of repentance but a recognition of political realities.

“I don’t know what you mean by sin. In politics, there is no sin. If someone realises they made a mistake and decides to correct it, there is nothing wrong with that,” Wike said, according to reports by Vanguard, Daily Post, and TheCable.

Wike, who governed Rivers State from 2015 to 2023, stressed that Fubara’s reconciliation was inevitable, noting that the governor had “no viable political alternative” outside the structure that brought him to power. He added that the renewed alliance would strengthen efforts to mobilise support for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s second-term bid ahead of the 2027 general election.

The minister recalled that he had predicted the reconciliation long before it became public, saying he welcomed Fubara’s decision with “an open mind.”

“Our doors are open. Everyone is welcome for us to work together. There is no better alternative. We will all work together to move the state forward,” Wike said.

The reconciliation follows months of political tension between both camps, which saw Rivers lawmakers loyal to Wike initiate impeachment proceedings against Fubara. The crisis, which divided the state’s political landscape, later eased after both sides reached a truce brokered by senior party figures.

Fubara’s recent declaration of support for the Rainbow Coalition during the inauguration of the Rivers Medical Industries Project in Port Harcourt, and his endorsement of Kingsley Chinda, a Wike ally and All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship hopeful, signalled a public return to Wike’s fold.

Political analysts in Port Harcourt view the reconciliation as a strategic move that could reshape Rivers politics ahead of 2027. It potentially consolidates Tinubu’s influence in the South-South region, where internal party divisions have often weakened electoral performance.

Meanwhile, Wike used the occasion to highlight progress on major FCT infrastructure projects, including the ISEX Road Corridor and Apo-Karshi Road, which he said were on track for completion by December. He appealed to the Ministry of Finance to release funds captured in the national budget to ensure timely delivery.

Observers say Wike’s remarks reflect his growing national political clout and his role as a key figure in Tinubu’s coalition-building efforts. The reconciliation, they argue, may mark the end of one of Nigeria’s most publicised intra-party feuds and signal a new phase of cooperation between Abuja and Port Harcourt.
