Police and state authorities are investigating a deadly attack on Government Secondary School in Iluke Bunu, Kabba Bunu Local Government Area of Kogi State, after gunmen killed three people. Kogi State Commissioner for Information Kingsley Fanwo confirmed the incident on his X page on June 10, 2026.
The victims included a three year old child and the school’s vice principal, according to the commissioner. The attack triggered fresh fear in the region as communities continue to worry about the safety of schools and children.
Security agencies have not publicly named the group behind the assault in the available reports. However, the violence adds to growing concerns over attacks on learning facilities in the North Central region.
Security Alert Follows Attack
The Department of State Services later issued a security advisory warning that suspected bandits were planning more attacks on schoolchildren in Edo State. The warning said Edo North Senatorial District could be targeted, prompting concern among parents and school managers.
The DSS advisory, signed by B. Agada on behalf of the state director, underlined the seriousness of the threat. Officials said communities must remain alert while security agencies step up surveillance.
The attack in Kogi came amid a broader pattern of kidnappings and violence against schools in Nigeria. Recent incidents in Borno, Oyo, Kebbi and Niger states have kept pressure on authorities to improve protection for students and teachers.
Parents Want Answers
Parents in affected communities are demanding stronger action to stop the violence. Many schools have closed after repeated attacks, while others are tightening security and limiting movement around school grounds.
Fanwo’s confirmation and the DSS alert have made the Kogi case one of the most alarming security stories in recent days. Investigations are expected to continue as families seek answers and security agencies search for the attackers.
