The Kwara State Police Command arrested a 21-year-old apprentice in connection with the alleged kidnapping and murder of a 60-year-old electrician, the command confirmed over the weekend, as part of a broader crackdown on violent crime across the state.

According to police sources, the suspect was apprehended following an intelligence-led investigation into the disappearance of the electrician, whose body was later discovered in circumstances that pointed to foul play. Investigators said preliminary findings suggested the apprentice may have had a personal relationship with the victim before the killing.

Police spokesperson for Kwara State Command confirmed the arrest and said the suspect was being interrogated to establish the full circumstances of the crime and to determine whether other individuals were involved. The command said charges would be filed once investigations are complete.

Part of Wider Kwara Security Push

The arrest comes as the Kwara State Police Command also announced a statewide crackdown on vehicles with fake, covered, or obscured number plates, describing the initiative as part of efforts to boost security and curb crime across the state. Officers have been directed to stop and inspect vehicles with non-compliant plates at checkpoints across Ilorin and other major towns.

Furthermore, the command disclosed that between June 6 and June 12, 2026, intelligence-led policing, proactive patrols, and collaborative security operations had led to multiple arrests and the recovery of weapons linked to criminal activity in the state. A senior police officer, identified as Udeme, said the achievements reflected the command’s renewed focus on visible policing across both urban and rural areas of Kwara.

However, residents in Ilorin said more needs to be done to address the underlying causes of violent crime, including unemployment among young people. Still, the police said the arrest of the apprentice demonstrated that even crimes committed by individuals close to their victims would be thoroughly investigated. Notably, the case adds to a series of recent arrests across Kwara, including the dismantling of a kidnapping network earlier in June that resulted in seven arrests and the recovery of firearms. Consequently, Kwara State’s security architecture appears to be operating at a heightened tempo compared to earlier in the year.

FCT Police Arrest Suspects in Viral Weapons Video

In a separate development, the FCT Police Command confirmed the arrest of suspects captured in a viral video brandishing AK-47 rifles while dressed in military camouflage. The video, which had circulated widely on social media and triggered public alarm, showed individuals posing with weapons and walkie talkies in what appeared to be a staged display. Police said the suspects were being questioned to determine whether the weapons were genuine and whether they had any connection to actual criminal operations. As a result, the FCT Police Command said it would continue to monitor social media for similar content that could incite fear or facilitate criminal recruitment.
