ABUJA — Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle has drawn a clear line for Nigeria’s football program. He said winning trophies is non-negotiable for the Super Eagles going forward. His statement came as preparations for the AFCON 2027 qualifying campaign intensify.

Chelle made the declaration in comments published by The Nigerian Observer on Thursday. He said Nigeria is a footballing nation with a history of excellence. He said he will not accept a mentality of participation over winning. The team must compete for every trophy it enters.

“Winning trophies is non-negotiable for the Super Eagles. That is the standard. That is what we are working toward every day in training and in every match we play,” Chelle said.

The statement carries added weight given Nigeria’s failure to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup. That miss, combined with recent friendly performances, has increased scrutiny of Chelle’s management and Nigeria’s overall footballing direction.

June Friendlies Approach

Nigeria faces Poland and Portugal in high-profile international friendlies in June. Both are strong European sides. Portugal, featuring Cristiano Ronaldo on his record sixth World Cup appearance, is one of the tournament’s favourites. Poland has also qualified for the competition.

Chelle is assembling his squad for the June window. Positive news arrived this week with Alex Iwobi’s clearance to return to action at Fulham. However, challenges remain. Victor Osimhen’s fractured arm, Michael Kayode’s decision to represent another country, and Canada’s capture of three Nigeria-eligible players have all reduced the available pool.

Furthermore, Ademola Lookman is in strong form after contributing nine goals and three assists for Atletico Madrid this season. His availability for the June window is expected to be confirmed in the coming days. Lookman would be a significant addition to Chelle’s attacking options.

AFCON 2027 in Focus

The CAF draw for AFCON 2027 qualifying is approaching. Nigeria will need to navigate the qualifiers successfully to reach the tournament, which will be hosted by east African nations. Failing to qualify for AFCON, following the World Cup miss, would be a catastrophic result for Nigerian football.

In addition, Kelechi Iheanacho’s Scottish title win with Celtic and Taofeek Ismaheel’s Polish league success with Lech Poznan have brought positive energy to the Super Eagles camp. Players winning trophies at club level typically arrive at international duty with higher confidence and better form.

Chelle said he has been watching his players closely and will make selection decisions based on form and fitness rather than reputation. He said the June friendlies against Poland and Portugal will give him valuable information about squad depth and tactical options heading into the AFCON campaign.
