LOS ANGELES — Morocco have reached the 2026 FIFA World Cup quarter-finals after a stunning 2-1 victory over Portugal. The result, confirmed on Friday, sends shock waves through the tournament and raises Africa’s collective hopes of a historic run. Cristiano Ronaldo’s Portugal were the pre-match favourites.

Morocco took the lead through a perfectly executed free kick before Portugal equalised through a Bruno Fernandes strike. The match seemed headed for extra time before Morocco’s substitute striker produced a late winner that silenced the Portugal supporters and sent the Atlas Lions into an unprecedented second consecutive World Cup quarter-final.

Morocco coach Walid Regragui was composed but visibly proud after the final whistle. He said his players have shown the world that African football is not just competitive but capable of defeating the very best. He said the team is not satisfied and will approach the quarter-final with the same determination.

Ronaldo’s World Cup Exit

For Cristiano Ronaldo, the defeat is likely the end of his World Cup journey. At 41, this was expected to be his final major tournament. Losing to Morocco in the round of sixteen, the same stage at which he was eliminated at the 2022 Qatar World Cup, is a painful conclusion to his World Cup story. He played the full 90 minutes and was visibly emotional at the final whistle.

For Nigeria, watching from the sidelines, Morocco’s victory is both inspiring and instructive. The tactical discipline, defensive organisation, and ability to score on the counter-attack that Regragui has built are qualities that Super Eagles coach Eric Chelle could draw lessons from as he builds his team for AFCON 2027.

African fans across the continent erupted in celebration after the result. Morocco’s quarter-final appearance means at least one African team has made the last eight at three consecutive World Cups. The continent is daring to dream of a semifinal place for the first time.
