ABUJA — The newly appointed coach of Nigeria’s Golden Eaglets has set out an ambitious plan to revive the country’s U17 national football program. He said his appointment by the Nigeria Football Federation gives him the mandate to restore the Eaglets to their historic standard of excellence.

The coach, whose full name and appointment details were confirmed by the NFF this week, said Nigeria has produced some of the world’s best youth footballers for decades. He said the challenge is to rediscover and harness that talent systematically and to build a winning culture from the youth level upward.

“Nigeria has always been a powerhouse in youth football. My job is to help us reclaim that status. We have the talent. Now we need the structure, the commitment, and the discipline to convert that talent into trophies,” he told NFF media.

The Golden Eaglets have a legendary history at the FIFA U17 World Cup, having won the tournament five times. However, Nigeria has not won the U17 World Cup since 2015 and has struggled to recapture its dominance at that level in recent years.

Talent Identification Drive

The new coach said his first priority is a nationwide talent identification exercise. He plans to visit all six geopolitical zones within his first 60 days to scout for players. He said Nigeria’s talent pool is vast but poorly mapped. Too many gifted youngsters are missed because of limited scouting infrastructure.

In addition, he said he will work closely with club academies, state football associations, and the Nigeria School Sports Federation to build a continuous pipeline of U17 talent. He said youth football development must be a year-round activity, not just a scramble when a tournament approaches.

Furthermore, the NFF said it will provide the new coach with adequate logistics and staffing support. The federation has come under criticism in previous years for failing to adequately support youth team coaches. NFF President Ibrahim Gusau said those failures are being addressed as part of a broader youth development reform.

Eyes on World Cup Qualification

The next FIFA U17 World Cup qualification campaign for Africa will begin later in 2026. Nigeria must navigate the CAF U17 Africa Cup of Nations to earn a World Cup berth. The coach said his team will be ready for that challenge if he starts talent identification and training immediately.

Nigerian football fans and analysts have responded positively to the appointment. Many have called for the Golden Eaglets program to receive the same level of attention and resources as the senior Super Eagles. Strong youth development, they argue, is the foundation of long-term Super Eagles success.

The coach said he is under no illusions about the scale of the task. Rebuilding a youth program takes time, resources, and patience. However, he said he has the full backing of the NFF and is determined to make Nigerians proud of the Golden Eaglets once again.
