Nigeria’s ex-President Olusegun Obasanjo delivered a stark warning on Friday, declaring the nation is trapped in “bondage” because of divisive ethnic leadership. Hosting a Southern delegation from the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) at his Abeokuta home, the elder statesman lamented that tribal loyalty has overshadowed true patriotism.
“We Need a Leader for All, Not Just One Tribe”
Obasanjo, who governed as both military ruler and civilian president, argued that Nigeria has yet to produce a president who truly represents the entire nation. “We’ve had leaders from the Fulani, Hausa, and Yoruba communities—but where is the Nigerian leader?” he questioned. “Until we find a selfless nationalist, our problems won’t end.”
He accused today’s politicians of prioritizing personal gain over national progress, adding, “Nigeria has failed Africa and the world.” His remarks come amid worsening poverty, economic instability, and security crises.
A Call for Prayer and Vigilance
Stressing the urgency of divine intervention, Obasanjo urged citizens to “watch and pray” for deliverance. Though politically unaffiliated, he emphasized, “Nigeria is my only party.”
