GLASGOW — Nigerian forward Kelechi Iheanacho came off the bench to score a crucial goal for Celtic in the Scottish Premiership. His strike kept the title race alive heading into the final weekend of the season.
Celtic came from behind to beat Hearts in a tense Saturday afternoon clash. Iheanacho entered the game in the second half. His goal gave Celtic the cutting edge they needed to secure a vital win and stay in contention for the title.
Celtic head coach said Iheanacho’s contribution was the difference. “He changed the game the moment he came on,” the coach told reporters after the final whistle. “That is exactly what we need from a player of his experience.”
The result means the Scottish Premiership title will be decided on the final day. Celtic and their rivals are now separated by a slim margin. Supporters on both sides are preparing for a dramatic conclusion to the season.
Iheanacho’s Strong Season
Iheanacho joined Celtic from Leicester City in 2025. He has had a strong debut season in Scotland, contributing important goals and assists. His form has made him one of the most popular players at Celtic Park.
Moreover, the Nigerian striker has maintained his place in Super Eagles conversations. His performances for Celtic give head coach Eric Chelle strong evidence for including him in Nigeria’s upcoming friendlies against Poland and Portugal in June.
However, Nigeria’s path to the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers requires form players at their best. Iheanacho, if fit and in form, is expected to play a significant role in the Eagles’ campaign.
NPFL and Women’s Football
Back home, the Nigerian Women’s Football League Premiership Super Six concluded on Saturday. Nasarawa Amazons claimed the NWFL title, their first since 2017. The team won the competition after a strong run through the Super Six round.
In addition, the Nigeria National League continued its weekend fixtures. Several clubs in the promotion race posted important results. The NPFL has threatened to sanction clubs that disrupt scheduled fixtures, a warning aimed at teams linked to match-fixing concerns.
Nigeria’s Flamingos, the U-17 women’s national team, have also arrived in Ikenne as they prepare for the 2026 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup qualifiers. Coach Bankole Olowookere said the squad is ready for the challenge ahead.
