Polish star Robert Lewandowski’s Major League Soccer debut was put on hold after the match between the Chicago Fire and Vancouver Whitecaps was postponed on Thursday due to air quality issues caused by wildfires.
Smoke from wildfires ravaging the Canadian province of Ontario spread through the United States, with border states including Minnesota, Wisconsin, Michigan and Illinois particularly affected by the resulting poor air quality.
The scheduled clash at the Fire’s stadium was pushed back to October 6, with the club saying the decision to reschedule was reached in close consultation with local health experts, MLS, Vancouver Whitecaps FC and the City of Chicago.
The postponement delays what would have been a highly anticipated debut for Lewandowski, whose move to MLS has generated significant attention among football fans following his decorated career in European football.
Wildfire related air quality disruptions have periodically affected sporting events across North America in recent years, prompting leagues to develop clearer protocols for postponing fixtures when air quality reaches hazardous levels.
The Chicago Fire and MLS have not indicated whether further schedule adjustments may be needed depending on how the wildfire smoke conditions develop in the coming days.
