NEW YORK — Nigerian-born wrestler Isaac Odugbesan has taken the wrestling world by storm. Last month, the powerhouse defeated Brock Lesnar at WrestleMania 42, cementing his place as one of the fastest-rising stars in WWE history.
Known in the ring as “The Ruler,” Odugbesan delivered a dominant performance against Lesnar. The victory shocked fans worldwide and sent social media into a frenzy. Nigerians celebrated the win as a moment of national pride.
WWE confirmed Odugbesan’s achievement in a post-WrestleMania feature. The organisation described him as a force of nature with rare physical gifts and a rapidly developing in-ring skill set. “The Ruler has arrived on the biggest stage in sports entertainment,” WWE said.
Odugbesan grew up in Nigeria before moving to the United States to pursue a career in professional wrestling. His rise from a relatively unknown prospect to a WrestleMania main card winner has captured the attention of both wrestling fans and Nigerian sports followers.
A New Nigerian Sports Icon
Nigeria has long produced world-class athletes in football, athletics, and boxing. However, Odugbesan’s success in professional wrestling opens a new chapter. He is now one of the most recognisable Nigerian faces in global sports entertainment.
Furthermore, his victory over Lesnar, one of WWE’s most celebrated performers, gives Odugbesan instant credibility in the industry. Wrestling analysts say he has the profile and skill to compete for a world championship in the near future.
Sports commentator Rotimi Bankole praised Odugbesan’s achievement. “This is huge for Nigerian sports. WrestleMania is the Super Bowl of professional wrestling. Beating Brock Lesnar there is as big as it gets,” Bankole said.
Nigerians Celebrate
Fans across Nigeria flooded social media with congratulations after the WrestleMania result became widely known. The hashtag “The Ruler” trended on Nigerian Twitter/X for hours. Several Nigerian celebrities also posted tribute messages.
In addition, the Sports Ministry has not yet made an official statement on Odugbesan’s achievement. However, sports advocates have called on the government to recognize his success and use his story to inspire young Nigerians to pursue careers in sports beyond football.
Odugbesan is expected to continue his WWE run through the summer. His next major match has not yet been announced. Fans and analysts are eager to see who WWE will position as his next rival following the historic Lesnar victory.
