CAN seeks probe of viral threats in Enugu, Jos
SHARE

The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has called for an urgent investigation into a viral video circulating online, in which unidentified individuals issued threats against so‑called “infidels” in Enugu and Jos. The association described the footage as disturbing and a potential trigger for religious tension if not swiftly addressed.

In a statement released by CAN leadership, the body emphasized that Nigeria’s fragile peace must not be undermined by reckless threats. “We cannot afford to let divisive rhetoric go unchecked. Authorities must act to reassure citizens that their safety is guaranteed,” the statement read.

CAN urged security agencies to trace the origin of the video, identify those behind it, and ensure they face justice. The association stressed that silence or inaction could embolden extremists and deepen mistrust among communities.

Residents in Enugu and Jos, already familiar with past episodes of religious tension, expressed concern over the video. Some community leaders warned that such threats could inflame old wounds if not contained. “We have lived through crises before. We do not want to see our children grow up in fear again,” one local elder told news247ng.com.

The video’s circulation has sparked anxiety among families, with many calling for stronger surveillance and community policing to prevent violence.

While official security agencies have yet to release a detailed statement, sources within the police confirmed that investigations are underway. Analysts say the government’s response will be critical in calming nerves and demonstrating its commitment to protecting all citizens, regardless of faith.

Beyond the immediate probe, CAN appealed to Nigerians to resist the temptation of retaliation or hate speech. The association reminded citizens that the country’s diversity is its strength, and that unity is the only path to progress.

“Religion should never be weaponized. We must stand together against those who seek to divide us,” CAN noted, urging both Christians and Muslims to continue fostering dialogue and mutual respect.

This incident highlights the growing influence of viral content in shaping public sentiment. Experts warn that unchecked online threats can quickly spill into real‑world violence if not addressed. The call by CAN reflects a broader concern about how digital platforms are being used to spread fear and division.

For Nigeria, where communities are still healing from past conflicts, the stakes are high. The probe into the viral video is not just about punishing offenders—it is about reaffirming the nation’s commitment to peace, tolerance, and coexistence.
