Political Tension in Benue as Campaign Billboards Destroyed
SHARE

Several political campaign billboards have been vandalised across parts of Benue State, raising concerns about rising tension ahead of the forthcoming elections. The destruction, which affected billboards belonging to multiple parties, has drawn condemnation from political leaders and security agencies.

Residents reported that the billboards were torn down or defaced overnight in Makurdi, Gboko, and Otukpo. Witnesses said the attackers targeted posters and banners displaying candidates from both major and smaller parties. The motive behind the destruction remains unclear, but authorities suspect political rivalry.

Police Response
The Benue State Police Command confirmed the incidents and said investigations are underway. The spokesperson for the Command stated that officers have been deployed to monitor campaign activities and prevent further damage. He warned that anyone caught vandalising campaign materials will face prosecution.

Political Parties React
Affected parties have condemned the attacks, describing them as undemocratic and provocative. Representatives of the major parties urged supporters to remain calm and avoid retaliation. They called on security agencies to ensure equal protection for all political actors.

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) reminded political parties that campaigns must be conducted peacefully and within the law. The Commission reiterated that destruction of campaign materials violates electoral regulations and undermines democratic principles.

Political analysts say the vandalism reflects growing tension in Benue’s political landscape. They warn that such acts could escalate if not addressed promptly. Analysts also noted that intolerance among supporters often stems from weak enforcement of electoral laws and poor civic education.

Residents expressed disappointment over the incidents, saying the destruction of billboards does not solve political disagreements. Many urged politicians to focus on issue-based campaigns rather than personal attacks. Civil society groups have also called for peace pledges among candidates.

Security Measures
The police have increased patrols around major towns and campaign venues. Community leaders have been asked to report suspicious activities. Authorities say maintaining peace during the campaign period is essential to ensure credible elections.

As campaigns intensify, stakeholders are urging restraint and respect for democratic values. The Benue State government has appealed to political parties to discourage violence and promote tolerance. Observers say how the situation is handled will influence public confidence in the electoral process.
