The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has announced the recruitment of 3,852 officers under its newly adopted annual hiring cycle. The move is aimed at strengthening border security, improving trade facilitation, and addressing manpower gaps across commands nationwide.
According to the Comptroller-General of Customs, Bashir Adewale Adeniyi, the recruitment exercise was conducted to ensure transparency and fairness. He explained that the annual cycle will allow the Service to consistently refresh its workforce, aligning with modern customs practices and global standards.
The newly recruited officers will be deployed across various commands, including border posts, airports, and seaports. The Service confirmed that priority was given to areas with critical manpower shortages. Officials said the deployment will enhance surveillance, revenue collection, and anti-smuggling operations.

Adeniyi stressed that adopting an annual cycle will help the Service plan better and avoid irregular recruitment exercises. He noted that the policy will also create opportunities for young Nigerians to join the Service regularly, thereby reducing unemployment and improving efficiency.
The NCS emphasised that the recruitment process was merit-based, with candidates selected through rigorous screening and examinations. The Comptroller-General assured that the Service will continue to uphold integrity in future exercises, ensuring that only qualified applicants are considered.
Analysts say the recruitment drive could improve Nigeria’s trade environment. With more officers on duty, clearance processes at ports are expected to become faster, reducing delays for importers and exporters. Strengthened border security is also expected to curb smuggling, boosting government revenue.

Several Nigerians welcomed the announcement, noting that the annual cycle provides a predictable opportunity for job seekers. However, some urged the Service to ensure that postings are fair and that officers are adequately trained to handle modern customs operations.
The NCS confirmed that the new recruits will undergo intensive training at customs colleges. The training will cover border management, revenue collection, and the use of digital tools for customs operations. Officials said the Service is committed to building a workforce capable of meeting international trade standards.
The adoption of an annual recruitment cycle marks a significant policy shift for the Nigeria Customs Service. Officials believe the initiative will not only strengthen the Service but also contribute to national security and economic growth.
