3 Dead in Warri-Itakpe Train Accident as Rail Safety Alarm Sound

Three people were confirmed dead on Monday, June 8, 2026, following an accident involving a passenger train on the Warri-Itakpe rail line, in a development that has renewed urgent calls for improved safety standards across Nigeria’s growing rail network.

The Nigerian Railway Corporation confirmed the accident and said emergency response teams were deployed to the scene immediately following the incident. Officials said an investigation had been launched to determine the precise cause of the accident and to identify any failures in safety protocols, equipment, or track conditions that may have contributed to the collision.

Passengers and eyewitnesses at the scene said the accident caused significant panic among those on board, with survivors describing scenes of chaos as rescue workers moved to evacuate the injured. Several other passengers sustained injuries of varying severity and were taken to nearby medical facilities for treatment.

Rail Network Expansion Under Scrutiny

The Warri-Itakpe rail line, which runs through the Niger Delta region, has been operational for several years but has faced persistent concerns about maintenance, scheduling, and operational safety. The line forms part of a wider government push to revive Nigeria’s passenger rail infrastructure, which collapsed for decades before successive administrations began reinvestment programmes.

However, safety advocates have repeatedly warned that the speed of rail expansion must be matched by equivalent investment in safety systems, staff training, and regular equipment maintenance. Furthermore, the accident comes at a time when the federal government is under pressure to demonstrate that its infrastructure investment programme is delivering safe, reliable outcomes for ordinary Nigerians. The Minister of Transportation had not issued a formal statement on the Warri-Itakpe accident at the time of this report.

Meanwhile, passengers and transport advocacy groups called for an independent safety review of all active rail lines in Nigeria following the accident. In addition, families of the deceased victims demanded a transparent investigation and full accountability from the Nigerian Railway Corporation. Notably, a fire also engulfed a plastic warehouse near a filling station in Osogbo, Osun State, over the same weekend, with firefighters battling for hours to contain the blaze. Consequently, infrastructure safety has emerged as a pressing national concern across multiple sectors simultaneously.

FCT Police Launch Violent Crime Response Unit

In related security news, the FCT Police Command launched a new Violent Crime Response Unit on Monday to combat kidnapping, armed robbery, and other serious crimes in Abuja. The unit is designed to respond faster to violent incidents and to provide a more specialised capability within the capital’s policing structure. As a result, the FCT is stepping up its security architecture even as the broader national security picture remains challenging.
