AWKA — Anambra Governor Charles Soludo’s cow-tail remark about the politics of lowered expectations in southeastern Nigeria has ignited significant public debate. An analysis published by Legit.ng examined the comment and what it reveals about the complex dynamics of Igbo political engagement with the federal government ahead of 2027.
Soludo made the remark in a context widely interpreted as a commentary on the tendency of some political actors to package inadequate responses to southeastern demands as generosity, with the cow-tail metaphor suggesting that some leaders are satisfied with scraps when they should be negotiating for the whole animal.
The comment has landed differently across political audiences. Some observers praised Soludo for candour about the structural political disadvantages facing southeastern Nigeria. Others said the metaphor was unbecoming of a governor who should be focused on tangible governance improvements rather than rhetorical flourishes about political appetites.
The Bigger Political Picture
Behind the colourful language is a substantive political question that will define southeastern Nigeria’s 2027 strategy: whether to negotiate for a specific political arrangement such as a southeastern or Igbo presidency, to build cross-regional opposition coalitions, or to maximise influence through governance performance at the state level.
Soludo, whose Anambra administration has received relatively positive governance assessments compared to some of its southeastern neighbours, has been coy about his own 2027 ambitions. His cow-tail remark is being read by some political observers as a signal that he believes the southeast deserves and should demand more than it has been offered.
Student Reactions
At Madonna University in Okija, where Peter Obi was speaking the same day about Tinubu’s alleged efforts to block his candidacy, students told reporters that Soludo’s remark resonated. They said young people in the southeast are tired of being told to be grateful for political tokenism and want substantive representation in federal decision-making structures, not symbolic appointments that carry little real authority.
