Plateau Lawmakers Face Backlash Over Life Pension Bill
SHARE

Plateau lawmakers face mounting backlash over a proposed life pension bill, with organised labour, civil society groups, and opposition parties condemning the legislation as self-serving and insensitive. The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and Trade Union Congress (TUC) have vowed to resist the bill through protests, while the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) warns it undermines public trust.

The Plateau State House of Assembly has advanced a controversial bill seeking lifetime pensions and retirement benefits for former Speakers, Deputy Speakers, principal officers, and members. Sponsored by Hon. Eli Ankala, the bill proposes the creation of a Pension Board to manage lawmakers’ entitlements.

Supporters argue the board would ensure transparency, proper documentation, and accountability in pension administration. However, critics say the bill prioritises lawmakers’ personal interests over the welfare of citizens.

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and Trade Union Congress (TUC) have rejected the proposal, describing it as anti-people. They announced plans to picket the Assembly on July 30, insisting the bill must be withdrawn.

Eugene Manji, NLC Chairman in Plateau, accused lawmakers of abusing legislative autonomy for self-enrichment.

Kenneth Shammah, TUC Chairman, noted that pension arrears dating back to 1986 remain unpaid, yet lawmakers seek lifetime benefits after serving only four years.

The Coalition of Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) condemned the bill as undemocratic and extortionist, warning it would deepen economic hardship.

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has strongly opposed the bill, labelling it reckless and insensitive. The party argued that the legislation would divert scarce resources from critical sectors such as infrastructure and security.

PDP spokesperson Choji Felix Dalyop warned that the bill could set a dangerous precedent, turning public office into a platform for lifetime enrichment rather than service.

Critics highlight several issues:
Economic Burden: Plateau State is struggling with insecurity, unemployment, and unpaid pensions. Adding lifetime benefits for lawmakers would worsen fiscal strain.
Transparency Deficit: Reports indicate the bill passed first and second readings on the same day, without public hearings or stakeholder engagement.
Public Distrust: Many residents view the proposal as disconnected from their realities, eroding confidence in governance.

Labour leaders and CSOs have urged Governor Caleb Mutfwang to block the bill, warning it could spark unrest if allowed to pass. They insist lawmakers should focus on legislation that improves citizens’ welfare rather than pursuing personal gains.
