Nigeria Handball Team Edges Guinea to Stay in World Cup Race

It was not pretty. But it was enough.

Nigeria’s men’s handball team edged Guinea in a tightly contested African World Championship qualifier to keep their hopes of reaching the global tournament alive. The victory was narrow, but the importance of the result was anything but.

Nigeria found themselves in a tense battle against a Guinean side that had nothing to lose. The Eagles were under pressure for large portions of the game. However, their experience and discipline ultimately made the difference. A late push sealed the win and sent the team into the next round of qualifying.

The performance drew a mixed reaction from handball supporters. Many acknowledged that the win was vital. However, they also noted that Nigeria will need to perform at a higher level in the games ahead. Still, a win is a win — and in knockout qualifying, that is all that matters.

Football dominates Nigeria’s sporting attention. As a result, the achievements of other national teams often go unnoticed. However, Nigeria’s handball programme has quietly built a competitive tradition in Africa, and this win keeps a dream alive that deserves more attention.

The Nigeria Sports Commission recently inaugurated new committees to improve governance across federations. Furthermore, the NSC has signalled its intention to support non-football sports more meaningfully. A handball World Cup qualification would be a timely validation of that commitment.

What Comes Next

Nigeria advances to the next qualifying stage, where the competition will intensify. The technical team will need to address the defensive vulnerabilities exposed in Wednesday’s match. Meanwhile, player welfare and preparation conditions remain areas that the federation must continue to improve.

For now, however, Nigeria lives on in the hunt for handball’s biggest prize. And that is a story worth telling.
