Brighton and Hove Albion completed the signing of Nigerian teenage winger Zadok Yohanna from Swedish club AIK Stockholm on a five-year contract worth 21.5 million pounds on Saturday, June 7, 2026, beating off competition from Chelsea, Newcastle United, and several other top European clubs for one of the most exciting young Nigerian talents in world football.
The 18-year-old, who was born in Bauchi State and developed at the Ikon Allah Football Academy in Kaduna, will join the Seagulls until June 2031. Brighton confirmed the signing in an official statement, describing Yohanna as a dynamic and creative attacker with the ability to influence games in the final third.
Brighton manager Fabian Hurzeler called the signing a statement of intent. ‘Having watched his performances, we believe Zadok possesses the creativity and attacking qualities that can influence matches in the final third,’ Hurzeler said in a statement released by the club.
A Record-Breaking Move for Swedish Football
Reports indicate that Brighton’s final fee could rise to approximately 30 million euros with add-ons, making Yohanna the most expensive player ever sold by a Swedish club. AIK confirmed the deal on Saturday, with the player set to complete the official formalities when the summer transfer window opens on June 15.
Yohanna had only joined AIK in 2025 after leaving the Ikon Allah Academy in Nigeria. Despite his limited senior experience, he quickly forced his way into the first team, registering five goals and four assists in 18 appearances. His performances alerted scouts across Europe, with Chelsea, Newcastle, Real Madrid, Borussia Dortmund, and RB Leipzig all reported to have been monitoring him.
Former Senate President Bukola Saraki, commenting on the transfer on social media, said Yohanna had forced his way in through sheer talent and determination. ‘He forced his way in,’ Saraki wrote, praising the teenager’s rapid rise from a Nigerian academy to the English Premier League.
Nigeria Celebrates a New Football Star
Yohanna’s transfer has generated widespread excitement in Nigeria, where football fans have long celebrated the country’s tradition of producing world-class Premier League talent. Furthermore, the deal signals that Nigerian academies continue to produce players capable of competing at the highest levels of European football, despite well-documented challenges in youth development infrastructure.
Meanwhile, the teenager is also in the frame for a Super Eagles call-up, having previously been invited by coach Eric Chelle for assessment. Notably, if Yohanna establishes himself at Brighton, he could become one of the most prominent Nigerian footballers in the Premier League in the coming years. Consequently, his signing has renewed national conversation about the importance of investing in grassroots football academies and pathways for young Nigerian talent.
