A late strike from Mikel Merino gave Spain a narrow 1-0 victory over Portugal at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, ending Cristiano Ronaldo’s campaign at what is widely expected to be his final appearance at football’s biggest tournament.
Merino’s goal proved decisive in a tightly contested match, with Spain advancing to face either Belgium or the winner of a separate quarter-final tie, while Portugal’s elimination brings a disappointing close to a campaign built heavily around Ronaldo’s continued influence on the international stage.
The result has been closely followed by Nigerian football fans, many of whom remember the Super Eagles’ recent pre-World Cup friendly against Portugal, during which Super Eagles captain Wilfred Ndidi issued a public message to Ronaldo ahead of the tournament.
