Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde’s call for an international probe into the mass abduction of pupils and teachers in the Oriire area of the state has ignited a political dispute with the Presidency, which has dismissed the demand as unnecessary and politically motivated.
The abduction, which took place on May 15 when armed men raided three schools in the Yawota and Ahoro Esinele communities, ended on July 10 when a combined security team rescued the remaining victims, with eight suspects arrested and others reportedly killed in the operation.
Makinde had earlier suggested a possible political motive behind the timing of the attack, noting that it occurred less than a day after he declared his intention to contest the presidency, a claim the Presidency swiftly rejected as unfounded.
The Presidency fired back on the same day Makinde renewed his call for an international probe, describing the request as an attempt to politicise a security operation that it says demonstrated improved inter agency collaboration among Nigeria’s security forces.
The exchange adds to a growing pattern of friction between opposition aligned governors and the Presidency over the framing and handling of major security incidents ahead of the 2027 general election.
Political observers say the dispute reflects the broader tension expected to characterise the run up to next year’s polls, with security performance likely to remain a recurring flashpoint between the ruling party and opposition figures.
