Kano APC Says Bye-Election Result Signals Position for 2027

Kano State Governor Abba Yusuf said on Monday that the All Progressives Congress’s performance in the recent Kano by-election signalled the party’s strong positioning ahead of the 2027 general elections, describing the result as a clear statement of the electorate’s confidence in the APC’s direction under the Tinubu administration.

Yusuf made the remarks in a statement following the conclusion of the by-election, which the APC won in the contested constituency. The Governor said the result demonstrated that the APC maintained a deep and active grassroots network in Kano, which is expected to be one of the most keenly contested states in the 2027 presidential and gubernatorial elections.

Kano Remains Critical 2027 Battleground

Kano, Nigeria’s most populous state, is traditionally one of the most important electoral prizes in northern Nigeria. The state’s presidential voting patterns have historically played a decisive role in determining national election outcomes, making any shift in its political alignment a matter of national significance. Analysts say both the APC and the opposition parties, particularly Atiku Abubakar’s ADC and the NNPP, which had previously strong Kano ties under Governor Yusuf’s predecessor Rabiu Kwankwaso, are all competing intensively for positioning in the state.

However, opposition figures disputed the Governor’s optimistic assessment, saying a by-election result in a single constituency was too narrow a data point from which to draw conclusions about 2027 state-wide or national trends. They noted that voter turnout in by-elections is typically much lower than in general elections and that the political environment could shift significantly before 2027.

State Police Debate Absorbs Governors

Meanwhile, Yusuf also weighed in on the state police debate, supporting the governors’ collective call for a fully resourced and constitutional decentralised police framework. He said Kano, as a state with a complex security environment, needed a state police force with the knowledge, resources, and legal authority to address local threats effectively. Furthermore, he called on the National Assembly to prioritise the bill before the end of the current legislative session. Consequently, Kano is simultaneously asserting its political relevance for 2027 while engaging in the most consequential security reform debate of the current legislative year.
