LAGOS — Veteran Nollywood actor Emeka Ike has revealed that he battled severe depression for several years following his high-profile divorce and a difficult period in his acting career. In a candid interview published on Friday, Ike described the psychological toll of public shame, financial pressure, and professional uncertainty that came simultaneously.
Ike said the divorce proceedings, which were extensively covered by Nigerian media, were deeply painful not only because of the personal relationship breakdown but because every detail of his private life was being debated publicly. He said the combination of marital failure, media scrutiny, and reduced acting opportunities created a perfect storm of depression.
“There were days I did not want to get up. Days I questioned everything. Depression is real and it nearly destroyed me. I am sharing this because I know there are Nigerian men who are going through the same thing and who feel they cannot speak about it,” Ike said in the interview.
Men’s Mental Health in Nigeria
Ike’s disclosure is particularly significant in the context of Nigerian men’s mental health culture. Nigerian society generally expects men to be stoic and to manage personal crises privately. Depression is widely misunderstood and frequently stigmatised, with many Nigerians attributing mental health struggles to spiritual weakness rather than medical reality.
Mental health advocates praised Ike for speaking openly. They said the testimony of a well-known public figure is more effective at reducing stigma than any number of awareness campaigns. They said men who hear a respected Nollywood veteran describe his depression experience may feel permission to acknowledge their own.
Ike said he found his way out of depression through faith, therapy, the support of close friends, and a return to creative work. He said he is now in the best mental space of his life and is using his experience to advocate for greater mental health awareness in the Nigerian entertainment industry.
