LAGOS — The Nigeria Customs Service has intercepted a luxury bus carrying military uniforms, cannabis, and other contraband with a combined value of N259 million. The seizure has raised serious national security concerns, given that military uniforms in the hands of civilians can be used to disguise criminal and terrorist activities.

Customs officials intercepted the vehicle during a routine stop and search operation along a major highway. Officers became suspicious when they noticed inconsistencies in the vehicle’s manifest. A thorough search revealed the military items concealed among legitimate goods and personal effects.

Nigeria Customs Service Spokesperson Abdullahi Maiwada confirmed the seizure in a statement. He said the case has been referred to security agencies for full investigation. Customs said it is working to identify the sender and intended recipient of the uniforms and other contraband.

“This seizure represents a serious threat to national security. Military uniforms in the hands of unauthorised individuals can be used to commit crimes, impersonate security personnel, and cause harm to innocent Nigerians,” Maiwada said in the statement.

The Military Uniform Threat

The discovery of military uniforms being trafficked is not a new problem in Nigeria. Security agencies have made similar seizures in different states in recent years. Armed groups including bandits, kidnappers, and jihadist fighters have been known to wear military uniforms during attacks to confuse victims and reduce resistance.

Several incidents in which attackers dressed as soldiers or police officers gained access to communities before revealing their true intent have been documented across northern Nigeria. The use of stolen or trafficked uniforms is a deliberate tactic designed to exploit trust in security forces.

Furthermore, the cannabis in the seized vehicle adds a criminal drug trafficking dimension to what is already a serious national security case. The combination of contraband types suggests the bus may have been operated by a sophisticated criminal network with multiple illegal income streams.

Customs Intensifies Operations

Nigeria Customs said it has intensified its inter-agency operations with the army, police, NDLEA, and DSS following a series of significant seizures in recent weeks. The service said coordinated intelligence is enabling it to intercept contraband that would previously have slipped through.

The service also warned transporters and logistics companies against knowingly carrying illegal goods. It said vehicle owners and operators can be held criminally liable if their vehicles are used to transport contraband, regardless of whether they claim ignorance of the contents.

The Manufacturers Association of Nigeria commended Customs for the seizure but called for faster clearance of legitimate goods at Nigeria’s ports. The association said improved port efficiency should accompany stronger anti-smuggling efforts to ensure that legitimate businesses are not disadvantaged by security-related delays.
