Customs Seeks Stronger Media Partnership to Tackle Smuggling

The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has called for a deeper collaboration with the media, stressing that effective communication and transparency are critical in the fight against smuggling and in building public trust.

Speaking at a stakeholders’ engagement in Abuja, the Comptroller-General of Customs, Adewale Adeniyi, emphasized that the media plays a vital role in shaping public perception and ensuring accountability in government institutions. He noted that Customs’ operations, which often involve sensitive enforcement activities, require accurate reporting to prevent misinformation and foster confidence among citizens.

According to reports by Punch Newspapers, Vanguard, and ThisDay, Adeniyi explained that the service is undergoing reforms aimed at modernizing its operations, including the deployment of technology to track imports and exports, streamline clearance processes, and reduce corruption. He argued that these reforms can only succeed if Nigerians are properly informed, hence the need for stronger media partnerships.

“The media is our ally in the fight against smuggling and economic sabotage. We must work together to ensure that Nigerians understand our mandate and the importance of compliance with trade regulations,” Adeniyi said.

The Customs boss highlighted recent successes in intercepting contraband goods, including arms, narcotics, and illegally imported vehicles. He stressed that such achievements must be communicated effectively to the public, not only to showcase the service’s efforts but also to deter potential offenders.

Adeniyi also acknowledged challenges facing the service, particularly in border communities where smugglers exploit porous routes. He noted that misinformation often spreads quickly in these areas, sometimes painting Customs officers as aggressors rather than protectors of national interest. Strengthening ties with the media, he argued, would help counter false narratives and highlight the risks posed by smuggling to Nigeria’s economy and security.

Media representatives at the event welcomed the call for partnership, urging Customs to provide timely access to information and ensure openness in its dealings. They stressed that transparency would enhance credibility and reduce suspicion among Nigerians who often view government agencies with skepticism.

Analysts say the Customs’ outreach reflects a broader recognition that enforcement alone cannot solve Nigeria’s smuggling problem. Public awareness, driven by credible media reporting, is essential to mobilize citizens against illegal trade. By engaging the media, Customs hopes to build a culture of compliance and discourage collaboration with smugglers.

The initiative also aligns with Nigeria’s push to improve revenue generation through non-oil sectors. Customs is a major contributor to government revenue, and smuggling undermines its capacity to collect duties and tariffs. Stronger media collaboration could therefore support fiscal stability by promoting lawful trade practices.

As Adeniyi concluded, “Our success depends not only on enforcement but also on the trust and cooperation of Nigerians. The media is central to achieving that trust.”

The call for partnership marks a new chapter in Customs’ relationship with the press, one that could reshape how Nigerians perceive the service and its role in safeguarding the nation’s economy.
