Tinubu Urges Team Nigeria to Pursue Wins

President Bola Tinubu has urged Team Nigeria to compete with discipline and integrity at the ongoing Commonwealth Games, stressing that victories must be achieved through clean performances.

Speaking during a send-off ceremony in Abuja, Tinubu reminded athletes that their conduct on and off the field reflects Nigeria’s image globally. He emphasised that breaking records should not come at the expense of fair play, noting that the country’s reputation in sports must remain untarnished.

“The Commonwealth Games present an opportunity to showcase Nigeria’s talent and resilience. But we must win clean. Every medal should be earned through hard work, not shortcuts,” Tinubu said.

The President’s remarks come as Nigeria prepares to field athletes across athletics, boxing, weightlifting, wrestling, and table tennis. With the Games attracting global attention, Tinubu’s call highlights the importance of sportsmanship alongside performance.

Sports Minister John Enoh echoed the President’s message, assuring that Team Nigeria has undergone rigorous preparation. He explained that athletes were trained not only in technical skills but also in anti-doping awareness. “We want our athletes to excel, but we also want them to compete with integrity. That is the foundation of lasting success,” Enoh stated.

Nigeria has a proud history at the Commonwealth Games, winning medals in athletics, boxing, and weightlifting. Analysts believe the current squad has the potential to surpass past achievements, particularly with rising stars in track and field.

Athletes themselves have welcomed Tinubu’s charge. Sprinter Favour Ofili described the message as motivating. “It reminds us that we carry the flag of Nigeria. We want to win, but we also want to inspire young people to believe in clean sports,” she said.

Wrestler Blessing Oborududu, a former gold medallist, added that discipline remains central to her career. “The President’s words are a reminder that our victories must be credible. That is how we build legacies,” she noted.

Observers say Tinubu’s emphasis on clean competition reflects broader concerns about doping scandals that have affected global sports. By reinforcing integrity, Nigeria aims to avoid controversies that could overshadow achievements.

Beyond sports, Tinubu linked the athletes’ mission to national pride. He argued that their performances can inspire unity and hope across Nigeria. “When you step onto the track, the ring, or the court, you represent millions of Nigerians. Compete with courage, and let your victories lift the nation,” he said.

Team Nigeria officials confirmed that the athletes will receive full support, including medical, nutritional, and psychological services. The government has also pledged incentives for medal winners, reinforcing motivation ahead of the Games.

As the Commonwealth Games unfold, attention will focus on whether Nigeria can break new records while maintaining its reputation for fair play. Tinubu’s directive sets a clear tone: success must be earned through discipline, transparency, and respect for the rules.

For Nigerian sports, the challenge is not only to win medals but to demonstrate values that inspire future generations. The President’s call for clean victories underscores the belief that true greatness lies in both achievement and integrity.
