His name is Zadok Yohanna. He plays for Brighton now. And Nigerian football fans have every reason to be excited.
Brighton & Hove Albion confirmed on Saturday that they have signed the young Nigerian forward from AIK Stockholm on a five-year contract. That long-term commitment from a Premier League club says one thing clearly — Brighton believe in this player for the long run.
From Sweden to the Premier League
Yohanna’s journey to England’s top flight came through Sweden, where he established himself as one of the standout forwards in the Allsvenskan. AIK Stockholm tried to hold on to him. In the end, however, Brighton’s offer proved too strong to turn down.
The move is notable for several reasons. Brighton have built a strong reputation for signing young talent from outside the major European markets. Moreover, the club’s track record with African players has been impressive over recent seasons.
What This Means for Nigerian Football
At a time when several players of Nigerian descent head to the 2026 FIFA World Cup under other national flags, Yohanna’s move to the Premier League represents a different kind of Nigerian story. He is young, ambitious, and now performing at the highest level.
Whether he eventually commits to the Super Eagles remains to be seen. Nigerian football officials will certainly be watching his development with great interest.
The Road Ahead
Yohanna joins Brighton ahead of the 2026-27 pre-season. He will need time to settle into the pace and physicality of Premier League football. Still, five-year deals are not handed out casually. Brighton expect him to be a significant part of their future.
