All Three World Cup Host Nations Eliminated in Round of 16
SHARE

For the first time in World Cup history, all three host nations have been eliminated in the round of 16. The co-hosts went home early. Their tournament goes on without them.

The 2026 FIFA World Cup produced one of its most extraordinary storylines in the round of 16, with the United States, Mexico, and Canada, all three co-host nations, eliminated before the quarter-finals. The development is unprecedented in World Cup history, with every previous host nation either advancing to the knockout stages or being eliminated later in the competition. The round of 16 did not spare any of the home favourites.

Mexico’s exit was one of the most dramatic of the round. A 10-man England side survived a genuine battle to eliminate the co-hosts, in a match that had the Estadio Azteca crowd in a state of prolonged tension. England went down to ten men following a red card but held on and ultimately progressed through a combination of defensive discipline and the kind of stubborn character that Gareth Southgate’s teams have come to embody.

The result prompted an outpouring of emotion in Mexico, where hosting the World Cup had generated enormous national pride. Losing to an undermanned England side at home, in front of a packed Azteca, made the elimination especially painful.

The United States, whose Balogun controversy had dominated World Cup headlines for days, were also eliminated, while Canada’s impressive opening run, which included a 6-0 thrashing of Qatar, ultimately ended before the final eight. Together, the three exits mean that the quarter-finals are entirely populated by nations who travelled to the tournament rather than hosting it.

Furthermore, this outcome has already sparked debate about the wisdom of the expanded 48-team format and whether co-host nations receive a fair draw or simply face stronger competition earlier in a larger field. FIFA will be examining these questions carefully as it plans future tournament structures.

Nigeria’s Perspective

From a Nigerian perspective, the co-hosts’ early exits carry a complicated message. Canada had 6-0 wins and thrilling performances. Mexico had the Azteca and a passionate support. The United States had Balogun, a player of Nigerian descent. None of it was enough to reach the final eight.

It is a reminder that World Cup knockout football is unforgiving, regardless of home advantage, talent, or expectation. For Nigeria, preparing for 2030 with that lesson in mind is essential
