Borno Cholera Outbreak Kills 40, Infects 3,000 Across 139 Communities

MAIDUGURI — A fast-spreading cholera outbreak in Borno State has killed more than 40 people and infected over 3,000 others across 139 communities in seven local government areas. Vanguard reported the alarming figures on Monday. Northern lawmakers have called for an immediate coordinated national emergency response.

The outbreak, recorded between May 1 and 28, 2026, has affected Maiduguri, Jere, Mafa, Konduga, Monguno, Ngala, and Magumeri. Health officials said the combination of inadequate clean water access, poor sanitation, displacement from ongoing insecurity, and the aftermath of seasonal flooding has created near-ideal conditions for cholera transmission.

NCDC said it has deployed rapid response teams to support Borno State’s disease surveillance and treatment operations. It said oral rehydration therapy is available at treatment centres and that healthcare workers are conducting community education about preventing transmission.

A Recurring Tragedy

Borno State has experienced multiple cholera outbreaks over the past decade. The combination of a large displaced population, inadequate WASH infrastructure in displacement camps, and the disruption of healthcare systems by years of conflict makes it one of the most vulnerable states in Nigeria for waterborne disease outbreaks.

Northern lawmakers said the federal government’s response to Borno’s cholera outbreak has been inadequate. They said millions of naira are spent on national security operations in the state while basic public health infrastructure that would prevent outbreaks like this remains underfunded and understaffed.

The WHO said cholera is entirely preventable with adequate clean water and sanitation. It called on all levels of government to urgently fund water and sanitation infrastructure in Borno and other high-risk states. The agency said treating outbreaks reactively is far more expensive and far less effective than preventing them through structural investment.
