Troops of the Joint Task Force North East, Operation HADIN KAI, freed 360 men, women, and children from a heavily fortified Boko Haram enclave deep in the Mandara Mountains of southern Borno State on Sunday, June 7, 2026, in what military authorities described as one of the most significant hostage rescue operations in the region in recent years.
Acting spokesperson for Operation HADIN KAI, Lieutenant Colonel Haruna M. Sani, confirmed the operation in a statement, saying the rescue followed weeks of intelligence gathering, covert reconnaissance, and operational planning. Military intelligence operatives combined human intelligence, signals intelligence, and aerial surveillance to pinpoint the exact location of the captives and map the insurgents’ defensive positions inside the remote enclave.
Special Forces and troops of Sector 1 launched a coordinated multi-directional assault under cover of darkness, achieving tactical surprise and overwhelming the insurgents before they could mount organised resistance. ‘The remaining rescued abductees were successfully evacuated to safe locations for medical care and humanitarian support, marking a major operational success and a significant setback for the terrorist group,’ Sani said.

However, the military confirmed that two infants died from exhaustion occasioned by the extremely challenging mountainous terrain and the harsh conditions they endured during their prolonged captivity. The heartbreaking loss of the two children underscored the brutality of the conditions under which the victims had been held since their abduction from communities around the Ngoshe axis of Borno State in March 2026.
Boko Haram had abducted 416 people, including minors, during a raid on Ngoshe and subsequently released a propaganda video in which a commander boasted about holding the community through Ramadan. A second video in April showed the captives. A third in May showed victims pleading for help from mountainous terrain, prompting intensified intelligence operations that eventually led to Sunday’s rescue. The group had also issued a 72-hour ultimatum demanding a N5 billion ransom and warned against any military rescue attempt.
A local youth leader and Borno Senator Ali Ndume confirmed the release independently and said the group freed totalled more than 400 people. Borno State Governor Babagana Zulum commended the troops and urged the government to provide comprehensive rehabilitation support for the victims and their communities. Meanwhile, former Vice President Atiku Abubakar also praised the rescue, urging the military to intensify its operations against all terrorist groups still holding Nigerian citizens.

Still, analysts warned that the success of a single operation must be placed in the context of a long-running insurgency that has killed tens of thousands and displaced more than two million people across the Lake Chad Basin. Furthermore, the fact that 416 civilians could be held for months in remote terrain before a rescue was mounted exposes the limits of Nigeria’s current intelligence and surveillance infrastructure in rural northeastern communities. Consequently, security experts say the operation, while inspiring, must be followed by sustained pressure on insurgent networks to prevent further large-scale abductions.
